Spicewood & Highland Lakes Lions Club is dedicated to saving children's eye sight through FREE early childhood vision screenings.

This screening process takes about 5 seconds or less to complete and can help the 1 in 20 children in the U.S. that have a serious eye disorder which can lead to a lifetime of impaired vision or even blindness.  Early vision screening when children are between six months and four years old enables detection when it is still effective to treat a child.  There is a 95% cure rate if vision problems are detected early.

What Parents & Caregivers Need to Know:

Ø70% of children that have trouble learning and diagnosed with a learning disability can attribute it to some kind of vision problem.
ØIt is estimated that 1 in 4 children has a vision issue, usually not visibly observable to parents.
ØMany parents wrongly assume pediatricians rigorously check for vision problems. Most pediatricians have limited training in identifying vision problems. Screenings are important even for children who receive top-notch medical care.
ØMany parents believe their child receives adequate vision testing in school. Usually these tests consist of reading an eye chart which are dependent on the child's cooperation.
Ø78% of preschool age children do not receive any type of vision screening. This is the important age group to detect a vision issue when treatment is most successful.
ØOur computer assisted screening device can be used on preverbal children as young as 6 months of age since it does not rely on interaction from the child.  The earlier the child is diagnosed, the higher the success of treatment and cure rate.
ØFor some eye disorders diagnosed after the age of five, treatment may not be as effective, and vision impairment may be permanent, thus early screening is vital!
ØThis computerized vision screening using PediaVision Spot equipment requires no physical contact or eye drops, and takes just seconds to perform. Parents receive an instant printout with test results indicating if their child needs referral to an Eye Care Specialist for follow-up.

.Early vision screening aids in detection of:

     Amblyopia (lazy eye)
     Strabismus (eye turns)
     Myopia (nearsightedness)
     Hyperopia (farsightedness)
     Astigmatism
           (
irregularly shaped corneas or lenses)
     Cataracts (media opacities)
     Anisometropia (differences in strength
            between
two eyes)

Early childhood vision screening enables treatment when it is still effective, preventing possible permanent vision damage uncorrectable with glasses or contact lenses.
