4th Annual Spicewood Buzzard Bump Fest

  • 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Dewey's land next Spicewood VFD (West of it)

The buzzards are circling in Spicewood, TX!  This means only one thing; it’s time for the 4th Annual Buzzard Bump Fest!  So save the date of Saturday, May 18, 2013, from 10 am to 7 pm for some good ole’ fashioned family fun!  The 4th Annual Buzzard Bump is brought to you by the Spicewood Lions Club.  The festival site is located in Spicewood, only 35 miles northwest of Austin on Highway 71, between the towns of Bee Cave and Marble Falls.

This festival is designed to appeal to people of all ages and will feature a “Bird Cook-Off,” a “Road Kill” Car Show, Washer Pitchin’ Tournament, giant hamster balls, merchandise and food vendors, musical entertainment and more.  Additionally, this year we are thrilled to announce the 1st Annual Buzzard Bump 5K and 1M Fun Runs.  5K begins at 9 am with 1M Fun Run to follow.  This is a USATF Sanctioned Certified Course.  Awards will go to the top 3 in each age division, male/female, for each race.  All children (12 and under) receive participation ribbons.  Early-bird, online 5K and 1M Fun run registration through May 10th will be $25 per person entry fee.  Starting May 11th, $50 entry fee per person.  Online registration closes at 6:00 p.m. on May 16th.  NO DAY OF RACE REGISTRATION.  For more race information and online registration, go to http://trackforlife.com/20130518main.htm.  Also, you will receive a free t-shirt and entry to Buzzard Bump Fest with your run registration.  Proceeds from the 5K and 1M Fun Runs benefit the Central Texas Lions KidSight Vision Foundation.

Upon its inception, the Buzzard Bump Fest was named in honor of the buzzard, the much-maligned and often over-looked bird considered by many to be the unofficial bird of Spicewood.  It is the Spicewood Lions Club’s signature fundraising event, the proceeds of which stay entirely in the Spicewood community.  For entry, a donation of $3 (or 3 canned goods) is requested (free for children under 5), with free parking at the site. The event is “BYOB” (ice chests allowed) and dog-friendly (if leashed and well-behaved).  Covered seating will be available in the “Rest Your Buns” tent, and folding chairs and blankets are permitted.

Additionally, if you have used eyeglasses you no longer need, you can donate them at this event.  We accept prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic and metal frames.  Children's glasses are especially needed.  Donate eyeglasses and change someone's life.  Imagine if you could help a child read, an adult succeed in his job, or a senior maintain her independence.  This also provides communities with more opportunities to grow and thrive.  Every day, Lions recycled eyeglass programs do all of this and more.  So bring your gently used eyeglasses and drop them into one of our eyeglasses collection boxes located throughout this event.

Entries for several activities remain open, including “Rest your Buns” sponsorships ($150), Road Kill Car Show entries ($20), Washer Pitchin’ Tournament ($20/team), the Bird Cook-Off ($50) as well as booths for food ($60), merchandise ($50), and community/non-profits ($10).

Adrilyn Lamb and Beth Howe, co-chairs for the food concessions at the 2013 Spicewood Lion's Club Buzzard Bump, are working hard to bring a great mix of traditional, "comfort" festival foods combined with fabulous healthy choices so that there is something for everyone.  Unlike many festivals, if you eat clean and healthy, you can't really find anything to eat.  Adrilyn and Beth feel confident that you will be able to at this year’s Bump.  And just as exciting, along with merchandise vendor chair, Linda Eicher, like last year, they are working towards having a wide range of vendors from our great Spicewood community.  Beth Howe states, “this is an annual event that has grown each year in popularity because the local, amazing, Spicewood Lions' Club is learning and tweaking to make each year better than ever!"

The Road Kill Car Show is back and this year will be better than ever with prizes being awarded in the following categories: Antique, Muscle, Custom, Roadster, Hot Rod and People’s Choice.  Early-bird entry registration is just $15.  After April 19, 2013, the entry fee is $20.  Check the www.buzzardbump.com site for more details.

Remember your taste buds this year for our 4th Annual Bird Cook-Off!  With first and second prizes of $100 and $50, this year we are adding a $100 People’s Choice prize.  Entry fee for cook-off teams is only $25.  For a small donation of $20, visitors can buy a ticket to sample all entries prior to judging.  However, only 25 of these special tickets will be sold so remember to get there early to buy your ticket.  Another fun addition to this year’s cook-off is the Winner’s Raffle.  With the purchase of a $1 ticket, you can enter to win a table for two (front and center at this year’s Bump) dining on the 2013 winning bird.  You’ll be dining in style, with cocktails and a server in tailsundefinedthe works, baby!).  So don’t forget to buy your $1 winning ticket at the Buzzard Bump!

Sherry Hollingsworth, Washer Pitchin’ Tournament chair, states, “come on out to the Buzzard Bump, diddle up and slide in the winning ringer to win the hefty prize money of $200.00 for 1st place and $150.00 for second place.  You can do it!!  First 5 teams to pre-register will get FREE BB shirts!”  The price is one of the biggest in the area.

Additionally, Patty Krueger, chair of this year’s Kids area, stated, “this year's Kids area will feature new attractions such as two giant hamster balls, a Playdo station and bubble makers!  Of course, the usual attractions will be there such as bouncy houses and a face painter.”

We are also excited with the return of so many of our past years’ sponsors, including Spicewood Plumbing & Spicewood Propane (“Soaring Buzzard” Title Sponsor), Poodie’s Hilltop Roadhouse (Music Stage Sponsor), Assassin Pest Control as “Road Kill” Car Show Sponsor, LandArt Garden Center as the “Bird Cook-Off” Sponsor, Washer Pitchin’ Tournament sponsor Spicewood Metalworks, and Bump N Grindz, Spicewood’s premier coffee/ice cream shop, as T-shirt Sponsor.

Other returning sponsors include:  Bee Creek Realty as “Kettle” (Vendor) Booth Sponsor, Duich Turf Services as “Buzzard Dump” (Port-A-Can) Sponsor, Hill Country Haiku as “The Roost” (Big Tent) Sponsor, Spicewood K-9 Club as Wristband Sponsor, Outhouse Designs as Logo Sponsor, Paleface Grocery as Drink Trailer Sponsor, Dewey Hollingsworth as Event Location Sponsor and Spicewood Volunteer Fire Dept as Parking/Facility Sponsor.

In addition, the Spicewood Lions Club will be honoring one local resident with the 2nd Annual Saluting Buzzard Award.  The winner, to be announced at 1:30 p.m. during the event, will be presented with a trophy as well as a $1,000 check for a charity of their choice.
